Targeting policy makers, the
FInES Position Paper was conceived as an input to the
preparation of the European Commission's orientations for the Eight
Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development in
Europe (FP8). It originates form the Future Internet Enterprise
Systems (FInES) Cluster coordinated by the European Commission's DG
Information Society and Media.
The fourth and final version of this paper focuses on the FInES
domain, with a special emphasis on research, but also on policy and
business-economic perspectives. Nonetheless, it takes into account
the broader spectrum of ICT issues related to the orientations for
FP8. It concludes on the urgent need for Europe's own distinctive
approach on innovation especially concerning business values. Thus,
a re-definition of the Enterprise is required, as well as a
different approach to ICT research for supporting European
enterprises.
The position paper makes several recommendations converging to
the necessity for a European Innovation Partnership (EIP) dedicated
to supporting the Competitiveness of European Enterprises through
research, while suggesting several instruments for the
implementation of the recommendations, as well as means for
leveraging their impact.
